DongleDock started in 2021 with a tangled drawer of USB-C cables and a simple frustration: nobody could tell us which hub, dock, or adapter would actually work with our specific laptop without dropping connections, overheating, or quietly bottlenecking our external monitor. We built the site we wished existed — one that tests accessories the way people actually use them, on real desks, with real workloads.
How the DongleDock lab score works
Every accessory gets four sub-scores on a 10-point scale: build quality, performance, ease of use and value. The overall lab score blends them into a single number you can compare across categories. Scores are our own editorial ratings, not Amazon customer ratings, and we revise them when firmware updates or new competitors change the picture.
Our Founding Story
DongleDock was founded by a small team of three former IT support technicians and hardware reviewers who spent years fielding the same question from coworkers and readers alike: "Which dongle actually works?" After watching one too many "best of" lists get published without a single unit ever being plugged in, we decided to build a site built entirely around hands-on testing. We started in a spare bedroom with two monitors, a power meter, and a stack of laptops borrowed from friends. Today, that spare bedroom has grown into a small testing space with a rotating bench of current-generation laptops, tablets, and the 98 accessories in our current catalog, which we've scored, compared, and in many cases, taken apart.
How We Review and Choose Products
Every accessory featured on DongleDock goes through the same core evaluation process before it earns a place in our recommendations:
- We buy almost everything we test. Manufacturers occasionally send review samples, and when they do, we disclose it clearly on the review — but purchasing our own units keeps us independent of vendor pressure.
- Real-world compatibility testing. Every dock, hub, or adapter is tested across multiple laptop and tablet platforms, including MacBooks, Windows ultrabooks, Chromebooks, and popular tablets, since compatibility quirks are often platform-specific.
- Sustained performance checks. We run extended file transfers, multi-monitor setups, and video calls simultaneously to catch thermal throttling, port dropouts, or driver issues that short demos miss.
- Build and connector durability. We inspect strain relief, connector tolerances, and cable flex, and we note any accessory that feels like it won't survive daily commuting.
- Power delivery verification. We measure actual wattage output using inline meters rather than relying on box specifications, since advertised and real-world charging speeds frequently differ.
- Value and long-term ownership. We weigh price against performance and factor in warranty support, firmware update history, and brand responsiveness to defects.
Products are only added to our "Recommended" lists after this full process, and we re-test existing favorites periodically as firmware, drivers, and operating systems evolve. If a once-recommended product stops performing well after an update, we revise the review rather than leave outdated praise online.
What Makes DongleDock Trustworthy
We're not interested in publishing the longest list of accessories — we're interested in publishing the right ones. That means we're comfortable telling readers when a popular, heavily-marketed dock underperforms, and we're just as comfortable recommending a lesser-known brand when our testing shows it's the better choice. Our reviews include specific details — actual throughput numbers, real charging wattages, and the exact laptop models we tested on — rather than vague marketing language.
We maintain editorial independence from manufacturers and retailers. While some links on DongleDock are affiliate links that earn us a small commission when you make a purchase, this never influences which products we recommend or how we score them. Our rankings are determined before any affiliate relationship is considered, and we turn down sponsorship arrangements that would require guaranteed positive coverage.
Whether you're trying to turn your laptop into a desktop workstation, find a tablet stylus that won't lag, or finally find a hub that doesn't disconnect your external drive mid-transfer, our goal is the same: to save you from buying the wrong accessory twice.
